Rivian Tests Dual-Motor Powertrain on Alaska’s Icy Roads: A Thrilling Display of Performance

Rivian put its Dual-Motor powertrain to the test on the icy roads of Alaska, and the results were exhilarating. RJ Scaringe, the CEO of Rivian, shared a brief video showcasing an R1T equipped with the Dual-Motor Powertrain maneuvering skillfully through snow and ice in Alaska.

Scaringe tweeted, “The team in Alaska is currently conducting validation tests on our Dual-Motor powertrain. Coming soon :)”.

In late December 2022, the electric vehicle company initially mentioned the upcoming deliveries of the R1T and R1S Dual-Motor models. Reservation holders were notified about the availability of the Dual-Motor AWD units through letters sent by Rivian. The company announced that it would offer two versions: a standard Dual-Motor AWD and an enhanced Dual-Motor AWD.

By February, Rivian confirmed that deliveries of the R1S Max Pack + Dual Motor variant would commence in the fall of 2023. During this time, the projected range of the R1S Max Pack + Dual Motor configuration was estimated to be up to 390 miles, dependent on the battery pack.

According to Rivian’s configuration page, the R1T Dual Motor AWD can achieve a 0-60 mph acceleration in as little as 4.5 seconds. Additionally, the Adventure package comes as a standard inclusion with the R1T Dual Motor AWD. Customers have the option to upgrade to the All-Terrain Package for an additional cost of $3,850. The All-Terrain upgrade includes a set of 20″ All-Terrain wheels, underbody protection, and a matching spare tire.

The Dual-Motor R1T is compatible with Rivian’s three battery pack options. The Standard Pack is available to customers at no extra charge and provides a range of 270 miles. The Large Pack, on the other hand, costs an additional $6,000 but offers an extended range of up to 350 miles for the R1T. Lastly, the Max Pack comes at an extra cost of $16,000 and offers an impressive range of up to 400 miles.

Rivian offers similar upgrade options for the R1S Dual-Motor AWD. Just like the R1T, R1S customers can choose between the Adventure Package or the All-Terrain upgrade. However, upgrading to the All-Terrain package for the R1S is slightly cheaper than for the R1T, priced at $3,600.

The R1S Dual-Motor AWD can accelerate from 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds and is compatible with two battery pack options. The Standard battery pack provides a range of 260 miles at no additional cost, while the Large pack, available for an extra $6,000, offers a range of 340 miles.

Starting at $73,000, the Rivian R1T Dual-Motor AWD with an estimated range of 270 miles is priced competitively. The Rivian R1S Dual-Motor AWD, with an estimated range of 260 miles, has a base cost of $78,000 before any additional options are chosen.
