Rivian Automotive is set to integrate Google Cast functionality into its electric vehicles by the end of 2024, marking a key update in its software development roadmap. The announcement, made during a recent discussion with Rivian’s Chief Software Officer Wassym Bensaid, also highlighted the company’s focus on expanding artificial intelligence-powered voice controls and refining its infotainment system.

The addition of Google Cast comes as Rivian maintains its stance against adopting Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, opting instead for features tailored to its platform. The .47 software update, scheduled for release before year-end, will enable Google Cast functionality for both front-seat and, eventually, rear-seat passengers, enhancing in-car entertainment options.

AI-Driven Voice Controls

Rivian’s forthcoming updates will also bolster its speech-to-text capabilities, aiming to make voice commands as versatile as physical interactions with the vehicle’s system. “We believe your voice should do anything your hand can in the infotainment system,” Bensaid stated, adding that this functionality will extend to mobile devices by 2025.

Despite growing market trends favoring physical controls, Rivian remains committed to a software-centric design philosophy. “The challenge with physical buttons is they’re fixed and limit flexibility,” Bensaid explained. Instead, the company will focus on modular software solutions, while haptic buttons will remain limited to steering wheels.

Scalable Climate Controls

Rivian’s software-driven approach extends to climate control systems, which are integrated into the vehicle’s overall software stack. Vivek Surya, Rivian’s Head of User Experience, highlighted the benefits of this design: “By integrating climate controls into the software stack, we enable automation and scalability, reducing the mental load on customers.”

Recent innovations include driver-specific customizable vent positions and tri-zone climate control, demonstrating the adaptability of Rivian’s software-first approach.

Potential Subscription-Based Features

Rivian’s Connect+ subscription service, priced at $14.99 per month or $149.99 annually, currently offers additional features such as remote access and updates. However, Bensaid hinted at future possibilities, including performance and range upgrades as part of the subscription model.

When asked about paywall-based performance enhancements, Bensaid responded, “If customers want it, then it’s something we should consider.” While no timeline has been provided, the company appears open to exploring such monetization options.
