Automaker Rivian has taken proactive measures to address a customer satisfaction concern related to the onboard charger in their R1T and R1S electric vehicle models. Upon discovering the issue, Rivian promptly launched a campaign to rectify the problem and ensure optimal performance for affected owners.

The company’s attention was drawn to the matter after reports surfaced on the RivianForums, where a member highlighted the concern. Rivian subsequently posted a campaign document on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website, shedding light on the matter. According to the document, the issue impacts R1T and R1S vehicles manufactured approximately between December 2022 and March 2023.

The problem can be traced back to faulty components supplied by a particular parts manufacturer. Consequently, owners of the affected electric vehicles are presently unable to charge them using alternating current (AC) through Level 1 or Level 2 chargers. However, it’s important to note that DC fast charging functionality remains unaffected.

To address this issue and ensure customer satisfaction, Rivian has decided to replace the onboard charger free of charge for owners whose vehicles fall within the affected population. This gesture aims to minimize any inconvenience caused and maintain the superior performance expected from Rivian electric vehicles.

While Rivian has not provided specific figures regarding the number of affected vehicles, nor confirmed the precise extent of the problem, it is evident that the company is actively addressing the issue. Feedback from RivianForums suggests that a relatively small number of owners have experienced the problem thus far. Some affected owners have reported a temporary workaround by reducing the amperage of the onboard charger from the maximum 48 amps to either 40 or 32 amps.
