Renault is showcasing the Emblème at the Paris Motor Show, presenting a vision for a family vehicle that integrates both battery-electric and hydrogen fuel cell technologies. The Emblème aims to demonstrate how CO2 emissions can be significantly minimized throughout a vehicle’s entire lifecycle.
Building on the Scenic Vision H2-Tech Concept introduced in 2022, the Emblème reportedly reduces CO2 equivalents by 90% compared to conventional combustion engine vehicles. This innovative family car is a product of collaboration between Renault and Ampere, emphasizing a low carbon footprint achieved through a variety of sustainable practices.
Renault’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond just the dual powertrain; the Emblème utilizes recycled materials with low carbon footprints, natural materials, and production processes that rely entirely on renewable energy. The design also incorporates reused parts, adhering to circular economy principles.
The Emblème features a “dual power electric powertrain,” consisting of a conventional 40 kWh NMC chemistry battery optimized for everyday local use, complemented by a hydrogen fuel cell for extended journeys. The PEM fuel cell system operates on low-carbon hydrogen stored in a 2.8 kg tank, offering an additional range of 350 kilometers with a maximum efficiency of around 60%.
According to Renault, this dual system allows the vehicle to achieve a total range of up to 1,000 kilometers, comparable to traditional combustion engine models, particularly due to the quicker refueling times associated with hydrogen technology.
However, this advantage is contingent upon the availability of appropriate hydrogen refueling infrastructure, which currently varies significantly from that used for heavy-duty long-haul vehicles.
The powertrain components, including the electric motor, battery, fuel cell, and hydrogen tank, are strategically housed within the vehicle’s rear wheel architecture.
Renault plans to unveil the Emblème in its entirety at the end of October 2024, further solidifying its commitment to innovative, sustainable transportation solutions.
