Renault has officially unveiled the all-new 4 E-Tech at the 2024 Paris Auto Show, marking a significant evolution from the rugged 4EVER concept introduced two years ago. This fully electric subcompact SUV reimagines the iconic Renault 4 from the 1960s, blending retro aesthetics with modern practicality and affordability.
The R4 E-Tech shares 68 percent of its components with the R5 E-Tech but is notably larger, measuring 4,140 mm (163 inches) in length—220 mm (8.7 inches) longer than the hatchback variant.
Its increased dimensions also make it wider and taller, featuring enhanced ground clearance and a generous 2.62 m (103.1 inches) wheelbase, which translates into more spacious seating and cargo capacity for small European families. The boot offers a generous 420 liters (14.8 cubic feet) of space, complete with a wide opening, low sill, underfloor storage compartment, and a power tailgate for added convenience.
Inside, the 4 E-Tech adopts a modern dashboard design, incorporating a 10.1-inch digital instrument cluster and a standard 10-inch touchscreen powered by the Google-based OpenR Link infotainment system. Unique interior touches include a steering wheel-mounted gear lever reminiscent of a lipstick tube and eco-friendly dark blue upholstery made from recycled materials, drawing inspiration from denim.
The exterior design stays true to the Renault 4Eever Trophy concept unveiled in 2022, albeit without some of the rugged elements. It features an illuminated single-piece grille that is fully covered and integrates round LED headlights, harking back to the original R4 design. The distinctive greenhouse and pill-shaped taillights further enhance its retro charm. A robust plastic cladding around the body accentuates its crossover profile, complemented by roof rails and large wheels.
Customization is a highlight of the 4 E-Tech, with a sculpted hood and roof available in body color or black, along with optional graphics that expand the design possibilities to an impressive 670 combinations. For those who enjoy an open-air driving experience, an optional canvas roof adds a fun twist, reminiscent of the Fiat 500 X Convertible.
Built on a stretched version of the AmpR Small architecture, the Renault 4 E-Tech features optimizations for improved ride comfort and steering responsiveness. The SUV is offered with two fully electric powertrain options, both directing power to the front wheels.
The base version features a 120 hp (90 kW / 122 PS) electric motor paired with a 40 kWh battery, delivering a WLTP range of 186 miles (300 km). The more powerful option boasts a 148 hp (110 kW / 150 PS) electric motor and a larger 52 kWh battery, providing a range of up to 250 miles (402 km). The larger battery supports fast charging at 100 kW DC, while the smaller unit allows for 80 kW DC charging, with both variants equipped for bi-directional charging.
The Renault 4 E-Tech is expected to make its debut in the UK market by mid-2025, joining a competitive subcompact SUV segment that includes fully electric models such as the Mini Aceman, Fiat 600e, Alfa Romeo Junior, Jeep Avenger, Peugeot e-2008, DS3 E-Tense, and Opel Mokka Electric.
In addition to the production version of the Renault 4 E-Tech, the automaker also showcased the FL4WER POWER concept, inspired by the R4 Safari from the 1970s. This striking concept features a matte Dark Green exterior with yellow accents, combined with 20-inch wheels, a lifted suspension, and a flower-themed fabric upholstery inside the cabin, encapsulating a playful and adventurous spirit.
