Porsche, the German automaker, has reported an impressive 18% year-over-year increase in global car sales during the first quarter of 2023, reaching a total of 80,767 units. The company has attributed this growth to its strong performance across all sales regions. However, the figures for all-electric vehicles, particularly the Porsche Taycan, remained flat.
Despite Porsche’s Taycan being an impressive all-electric sports car, the model saw a 3.4% decrease in sales during Q1 2023 compared to the previous year, marking the fourth consecutive quarter of year-over-year decline. The Taycan models (including the Taycan Cross Turismo and Taycan GTS) achieved a total of 9,152 unit sales, accounting for 11.3% of the brand’s total volume.
Interestingly, the Taycan is the only Porsche model that didn’t show growth in Q1 2023. Porsche attributed this lack of growth to “existing supply bottlenecks in the supplier industry, which are having a particular impact on the electric sports car.”
Despite the dip in Taycan sales, Porsche’s other models experienced growth. The Macan, Cayenne, and 911 models achieved 30%, 23%, and 19% growth, respectively, while the Panamera and 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman saw 10% and 6% growth, respectively.
Cumulatively, Porsche has sold more than 105,000 Taycan units globally, and the company predicts that, assuming some improvements through the year, it can reach 40,000 unit sales by the end of 2023.
Although Porsche does not report the number of plug-in hybrid sales (Cayenne and Panamera), the company believes that they also have a noticeable share of the total volume.
