Sports car manufacturer Porsche has successfully acquired a majority stake in Varta subsidiary V4Drive Battery, which specializes in large-format lithium-ion round cells used by Porsche.
This move comes as Varta continues its restructuring efforts, recently announcing a bridge loan and a reorganization plan agreed upon with loan and promissory note lenders, as well as with Austrian shareholder Michael Tojner.
As part of this plan, both Porsche and Tojner are investing €30 million each into Varta, ensuring the company’s financing through the end of 2027.
Porsche’s investment in Varta and V4Drive Battery aims to secure its supply chain. V4Drive Battery currently supplies battery cells for the performance hybrid drive of the Porsche 911 Carrera GTS.
Additionally, the construction of a new production facility for booster cells in Nördlingen, which Porsche initiated in spring 2024, will proceed as planned.
According to a press release, Varta seeks a strong long-term partner in Porsche for further development and marketing of its battery cells. Lutz Meschke, Deputy Chairman of the Executive Board at Porsche AG, emphasized that the two companies already collaborate on high-performance battery cells. He stated, “With the planned majority takeover of V4Drive, we aim to drive the company forward and would make an important contribution to keeping key technologies in Germany.”
