Polestar 4, the latest model from the luxury electric vehicle manufacturer, Polestar, is now available for purchase in China, and it comes with a higher starting price than Tesla’s popular Model Y.
Polestar, which is co-owned by Geely and Volvo Cars, unveiled the Polestar 4 at the Shanghai Auto Show on its opening day, and it is available in six different versions, including three single-motor and three dual-motor models. The prices for the single-motor versions start at RMB 349,800 ($50,870), while the dual-motor versions range from RMB 453,800 to RMB 533,800.
These price ranges are significantly higher than Tesla’s Model Y, which is currently the best-selling electric SUV in China and is available in three versions starting at RMB 261,900.
The single-motor rear-drive versions of the Polestar 4 are powered by permanent magnet synchronous motors, which can produce up to 200 kW of power and 343 Nm of torque, with a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 7.4 seconds.
Meanwhile, the dual-motor versions feature two permanent magnet synchronous motors with a combined power output of 400 kW, allowing it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.8 seconds. This is faster than Tesla’s Model Y Long Range and Performance models, which have acceleration times of 5.0 seconds and 3.7 seconds, respectively.
The Polestar 4 also offers two battery pack options, with capacities of 88 kWh and 102 kWh. The former is used in the two least expensive versions, while the latter is used in the other four.
The Polestar 4’s impressive battery capacity provides a CLTC range of 612 km to 709 km, depending on the version.
Polestar was founded in 2017 by Volvo and Geely, and its first product, the Polestar 1, was only available in limited numbers and has since been discontinued. The Polestar 2 is the brand’s first real production model, which was officially delivered in 2020 and is only produced in China.
Polestar also recently unveiled the Polestar 3 SUV, which had its global debut on October 12, 2022, and will be available in two versions in China starting at RMB 880,000 and RMB 1,030,000, respectively. The company also announced a price reduction for the Polestar 3 in China on March 17, making it nearly RMB 200,000 cheaper than the international debut price last year.
With its high-end features and impressive performance, the Polestar 4 is sure to be a popular choice among luxury electric vehicle enthusiasts in China, despite its higher price tag compared to its competitors.
