Opel’s Crossland and Grandland Models to Receive Electric Powertrains in 2024

German automaker Opel has officially announced that the all-electric successor to the Crossland, initially revealed in March 2022, is set to hit the roads in 2024. The exact platform and manufacturing location for the electric variant have yet to be disclosed by the company.

The original Crossland, formerly known as the Crossland X, emerged as a collaborative effort between Opel and PSA, preceding the French company’s acquisition. The current Crossland, introduced in 2017, utilizes the CMP platform.

For the electric successor, Opel is weighing two potential options. It could adopt the upgraded second generation of the e-CMP, featuring a familiar 115 kW powertrain and a 54 kWh battery—technology already deployed in Opel’s Mokka Electric. Alternatively, Opel might consider the recently unveiled CMP Smart Car platform, positioning the Crossland as an economical and practical alternative with LFP batteries. While speculative, this aligns with Stellantis’ production plans, as the slated production of the SLTA Small electric platform is expected to commence in 2025 at Stellantis plants in Spain.

In addition to the Crossland Electric, Opel has confirmed an all-electric successor to the Grandland, scheduled for production in Eisenach in the second half of 2024. This model will be based on the new electric platform STLA Medium, accommodating batteries of up to 98 kWh and contributing to Opel’s broader electrification strategy.

By the end of 2024, Opel aims to have an all-electric model available in every series, marking a significant milestone in the company’s transformation. Opel CEO Florian Huettl stated, “2024 will not only mark an important company anniversary. We are also impressively showing how successfully Opel is mastering the transformation in the automotive industry. We are completing our electrified range with the purely electric successors to the Crossland and Grandland. Our goal is affordable, CO2-neutral mobility.”

Furthermore, Opel has outlined its long-term commitment to electric mobility, intending to exclusively sell electric cars from 2028. Future additions to Opel’s battery electric vehicle (BEV) lineup include the successor to the Insignia mid-size saloon and an electric reinterpretation of the iconic Manta model.
