Nvidia’s venture capital arm, NVentures, has made an investment in Carbon Robotics, a startup based in Seattle that specializes in developing autonomous laser-weeding technologies. While the exact amount of the investment was not disclosed, Carbon Robotics plans to utilize the funds to further advance the development and deployment of its autonomous weeding solutions, which leverage AI and robotics for precise weeding capabilities.
Mohamed Siddeek, head of NVentures, highlighted the potential of AI and advanced robotics in addressing challenges in agriculture, stating, “Carbon Robotics’ innovative solution improves farming practices to increase sustainability and improve the quality of produce available to consumers.”
Carbon Robotics’ flagship product, the LaserWeeder, utilizes lasers and sensors to identify and target weeds. It boasts impressive capabilities, processing 4.7 million high-resolution images per hour using 24 Nvidia graphic processing units. The LaserWeeder can eradicate 5,000 weeds per minute, providing rapid and efficient weed control.
The robotic weeder also offers real-time crop data analysis, sending valuable insights to farmers via the cloud. According to Carbon Robotics, its laser-driven solutions can reduce weed control costs by 80% and help farmers enhance crop yield and quality.
Carbon Robotics’ approach eliminates the need for traditional methods of weed control, such as chemical herbicides, hand labor, or soil cultivation. This approach aligns with the company’s commitment to using AI to protect crops, people, and the planet.
Last April, Carbon Robotics completed its Series C funding round, raising $30 million from lead investor Sozo Ventures, as well as existing investors Anthos Capital, Fuse Venture Capital, Ignition Partners, Liquid2, and Voyager Capital. This investment reflects the growing interest and support for innovative agricultural technologies that promote sustainability and efficiency.
