McLaren’s plan to build its own electric vehicle has echoed from the beginning of the year. However, it is not the type of super fast supercar and sports car that will be developed into an EV, but the type of SUV.
The plan, this electric SUV will be paved in 2026 and will go head to head with the Taycan from Porsche. It is known in an interview with Auto Express, McLaren’s new CEO, Michael Leiters, confirmed that the manufacturer is a bit confused about what kind of electric sports sedan can compete with the Porsche Taycan.
So McLaren decided to choose an SUV as the first EV to be produced, making the manufacturer the same as Lotus who released this year’s Eletre.
So what about sports and super sports cars from McLaren so far? The manufacturer says it will still make it according to which direction the EV world winds blowing.
As a first step, the British manufacturer is actually right by launching the first hybrid variant, Artura. So the next step could now be the brand’s first pure electric sports car.
But the manufacturer insists there won’t be any competitors for the Lotus Evija or Rimac Nevera, any time soon, according to the McLaren CEO.
He believes the technology is not mature enough to meet the high demands placed on super sports cars.
Instead, McLaren will concentrate on developing conventional electric vehicles such as sedans and SUVs as already proposed.
