Norway’s dominance of the electric vehicle (EV) market continues to set a global benchmark, with 88.9 percent of all new cars registered in 2024 being electric, according to the Norwegian Road Information Authority (OFV).

While this marks a notable year-on-year increase of 9.4 percent, the share of EVs dipped slightly below the average in December, with electric vehicles accounting for 85.5 percent of the market.

In December 2024, 11,668 new EVs were registered, reflecting a 30.3 percent increase compared to December 2023. However, the proportion of emission-free vehicles fell short of previous months’ exceptional figures.

Notably, November 2024 saw an impressive 93.6 percent share of electric cars, a reminder of Norway’s ambitious target to achieve 100 percent EV sales by 2025. While the OFV acknowledges that the goal has not yet been met, it emphasizes that no other country comes close to such high EV penetration.

Despite the impressive growth of EVs, traditional combustion engines are not banned in Norway after 2025, though taxes on new combustion vehicles will rise significantly from April 2025. The continued success of Norway’s EV market is largely attributed to government incentives, including VAT exemptions for electric cars.

However, the OFV has warned that further incentives will be necessary to meet the 2025 target. The market has also seen a significant drop in the sales of plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), which fell to just 2.7 percent of total new car registrations in 2024, down from 7.9 percent in 2023.

Tesla remains the leader in Norway’s electric car market, with the Model Y securing a commanding 13.1 percent market share in 2024, although its sales fell compared to 2023. The Tesla Model 3 and the newly launched Volvo EX30 also performed strongly, securing second and third positions, respectively.

Volkswagen’s ID.4 followed closely in fourth place, demonstrating the increasing demand for electric models across various manufacturers. Chinese automakers like BYD and Xpeng also made gains in the Norwegian market, with BYD breaking into the top ten for the first time.
