Nikola has announced the fourth location of its HYLA brand’s hydrogen station network in California. This move marks a significant step towards scaling its long-term hydrogen distribution solutions to meet market demand and decarbonize the heavy-duty transport sector.

The new refueling station and logistics infrastructure will be built in West Sacramento, California. This location will further support Nikola’s truck demand, including third-party heavy-duty hydrogen electric vehicles, and underpin the company’s integrated energy and zero-emissions truck portfolio.

Nikola aims to have 60 HYLA brand stations in place across California by the end of 2026 to support its growth in the state. California is a critical market for Nikola’s integrated energy solutions and zero-emission trucks, including the Class 8 Nikola Tre battery-electric vehicle and Nikola Tre hydrogen electric vehicle.

“The first four stations in California are intended as part of Nikola’s energy strategy to support hydrogen electric truck demand,” said Carey Mendes, President of Energy at Nikola. “The HYLA hydrogen refueling stations, along with a comprehensive energy supply, will provide our customers the support needed to seamlessly transition their fleets to zero-emissions.”

Nikola’s progress towards establishing a sustainable hydrogen ecosystem in California has received strong support from Gia Vacin, Deputy Director of ZEV Market Development at the Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development. “Projects like these will be key in decarbonizing California’s economy while improving local air quality and providing tangible benefits to frontline communities,” said Vacin.

West Sacramento is an ideal location for Nikola’s fourth hydrogen station due to the density of trucking and logistics traffic, as well as the number of distribution centers in the area. The HYLA hydrogen network will serve as an important step in delivering a broader array of hydrogen fueling solutions to the commercial trucking industry.

Nikola’s Tre hydrogen electric vehicle has received approval from the California Air Resources Board Hybrid and Zero-Emission Truck and Bus Voucher Incentive Project program. Customers of the Tre hydrogen electric vehicle can now access a point-of-sale incentive starting at $240,000 and ranging up to $288,000 per truck in 2023, along with a potential $40,000 clean commercial vehicle tax credit from the federal government.
