New York State is taking significant strides towards promoting electric vehicle (EV) adoption by announcing a $29 million investment in Level 2 charging infrastructure and incentives. The allocation of funds aims to address cost constraints and “range anxiety,” making it easier for more people to make the switch to cleaner transportation options.
The state is committing $15 million to enhance the ‘Charge Ready NY 2.0’ program, which will focus on the installation of Level 2 chargers at workplaces, multifamily buildings, and public facilities in disadvantaged communities. Under this program, up to 50% of the installation cost for Level 2 chargers will be covered, with disadvantaged communities also benefiting from additional funding of up to $2,500 for the chargers. Meanwhile, chargers at workplaces and residential buildings will be eligible for incentives of up to $2,000.
An additional $14 million will be infused into the well-established “Drive Clean Rebate” program. Through this initiative, approximately 60 EV models will be eligible for subsidies ranging from $500 to $2,000, making EV ownership more affordable and attractive for New Yorkers.
Assemblymember Didi Barrett emphasized the importance of expanding Level 2 charging infrastructure to address the concerns of potential EV adopters. By making it more accessible, the state aims to ensure that all New Yorkers can transition to cleaner energy transportation options.
The president and CEO of the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, Doreen M. Harris, highlighted the rapid acceleration of EV adoption in the state. To meet the growing demand, deploying charging infrastructure is crucial. The additional support through Charge Ready NY 2.0 and the Drive Clean Rebate will not only facilitate convenient charging but also reduce the overall cost of purchasing a new EV, encouraging more New Yorkers to join the EV revolution.
Earlier in April, New York earmarked $8.3 million for funding 255 charging stations across 70 municipalities. This move is set to further bolster the EV charging infrastructure, with 28 of the stations being equipped with DC fast chargers.
Overall, New York’s substantial investment in charging infrastructure and EV incentives demonstrates the state’s commitment to driving sustainable transportation and fostering a cleaner and greener future for its residents. With these measures in place, more New Yorkers are expected to embrace electric vehicles, contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and the state’s environmental goals.
