In recent months, the NEVS Emily GT project acquisition has been making headlines as it inches closer to production. After Saab’s defunct status in 2011, New Electric Vehicle Sweden (NEVS) acquired the remaining assets of the renowned auto manufacturer. NEVS had its ambitious plans for the brand until Chinese conglomerate Evergrande assumed control. However, financial troubles plagued Evergrande in the past years.
During this period, the former Saab engineers at NEVS were diligently working on the Emily GT, a four-door electric sports sedan that aimed to surpass the capabilities of many existing electric sedans on the market. The standout feature of the Emily GT is its massive 175-kilowatt-hour battery pack, promising an impressive range of approximately 600 miles. Compared to the usual 100 to 118 kWh packs found in long-range electric sedans, the Emily GT’s range seemed within realistic reach.
Powering the Emily GT is a unique setup of four in-wheel motors, providing it with a substantial 480 horsepower. However, the true highlight lies in its torque vectoring ability, enabling the sedan to exhibit exceptional handling and stability akin to a sports car on the track, despite its large and heavy frame.
Despite the promising prototype, financial difficulties impeded NEVS from bringing the Emily GT to the market. However, this spring, the automaker decided to showcase its product to potential investors in a bid to seek support. As of July, undisclosed investors have successfully acquired the project, signaling a significant step towards its realization.
While the identities of the purchasing parties remain under wraps, it has been reported that Svante Andersson, CEO of Stenhaga Invest AB, owns Saab’s former manufacturing facility in TrollhƤttan, Sweden. The plan is for the NEVS Emily GT to be manufactured at this historical assembly plant, lending further authenticity to the rebirth of the beloved Swedish automaker.
As the NEVS Emily GT project garners momentum, it breathes new life into the legacy of Saab, which has been absent for over a decade. The sedan’s cutting-edge features and advancements in electric vehicle technology have piqued the interest of potential investors, and the upcoming production at the iconic TrollhƤttan facility holds the promise of a brighter future for this iconic brand.
