Mercedes-Maybach Unveils Its First PHEV Model: The Mercedes-Maybach S 580 e

Mercedes-Maybach is making its entry into the world of electric vehicles with the launch of its first plug-in hybrid model, the Mercedes-Maybach S 580 e. This new model is essentially the Maybach version of the Mercedes S-Class plug-in hybrid. Additionally, Mercedes-Maybach is also set to unveil its first fully electric model before the end of 2023.

The new plug-in hybrid Mercedes-Maybach S 580 e boasts an electric range of up to 100 km according to WLTP standards. The electric motor provides 110 kW to the total system output of 375 kW. This performance is not surprising, as the drive system is identical to the Mercedes-Benz S 580 e that was introduced in 2021. The internal combustion engine is a 3-liter inline six-cylinder with a power output of 270 kW.

The Maybach S 580 e comes equipped with an 11 kW charger as standard, which enables three-phase charging via the AC grid. On the other hand, the 60 kW DC charger, which is part of the standard equipment in the regular S 580 e, is only available as an option in the Maybach model and takes around 30 minutes to charge the battery.

When it comes to differences, the Maybach S 580 e primarily differs in its appearance and equipment. The front grille features the vertical slats that are distinctive of Maybach, and the rims are also designed in the style of Maybach models with internal combustion engines. No interior shots of the luxury saloon have been released yet.

The Mercedes-Maybach S 580 e will initially be launched in China, followed by Thailand, Europe, and other countries. Mercedes has not yet revealed the pricing details, but the Mercedes-Benz S 580 e starts at 132,923 euros in Germany, or 136,612 euros for the long-wheelbase version. The Maybach model of the long-wheelbase version is expected to be significantly more expensive.

“With our first plug-in hybrid model, we are combining the luxurious experience of Maybach with locally emission-free driving in electric mode,” says Daniel Lescow, Head of Mercedes-Maybach at Mercedes-Benz Group. “The Mercedes-Maybach S 580 e represents an important step in our transformation from a traditional brand to an electric future, and we will present the first fully electric model as early as 2023.”

However, no further details have been given regarding the upcoming Maybach BEV. But, a glimpse into the recent past, specifically the IAA 2021, could provide a clue. At the event, Mercedes-Maybach presented the Concept Mercedes-Maybach EQS, which was based on the yet-to-be-unveiled EQS SUV, not the EQS saloon.
