Mercedes-Benz Unveils Pricing for All-New eSprinter Electric Van in the US Market

Mercedes-Benz has officially disclosed the pricing details for its inaugural fully electric van, the all-new eSprinter, catering to the North American market. Based on Mercedes-Benz Vans’ innovative Electric Versatility Platform, the eSprinter is now available for ordering at authorized dealerships across the United States, starting at a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $74,181. This starting price includes a $2,295 destination and delivery charge. Notably, the new eSprinter sidesteps the Chicken Tax – a tariff imposed on light trucks – as it is slated for assembly at the company’s facility in Charleston, South Carolina.

In contrast to the Ford E-Transit, which enters the market at a base price of $51,890, the eSprinter’s standard configuration in the US is the 170-inch long wheelbase cargo version, boasting a total length of 280 inches and a high-roof setup. This design choice translates to an increased payload capacity and more generous cargo space compared to its competition, even surpassing the longer-wheelbase E-Transit with a 148-inch base.

Under the hood, the eSprinter draws power from a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, offering a usable capacity of 113 kilowatt-hours. This battery configuration is estimated to provide a range of approximately 249 miles according to the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) standard. While the precise range as per the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates is anticipated to be slightly lower, around the 200-mile range, this still marks a commendable distance for an electric commercial vehicle. Notably, the use of LFP chemistry enhances durability and eliminates the reliance on cobalt or nickel, contributing to a more sustainable solution.

Charging the eSprinter is facilitated by an on-board AC charger, capable of delivering a maximum charging power of 9.6 kW. The standard maximum charging power available at Direct Current (DC) fast-charging stations is up to 50 kW. However, for those seeking expedited charging times, an optional upgrade is on offer, enabling DC fast charging capability of up to 115 kW. This enhancement allows the battery to charge from 10 to 80 percent state of charge in just over 40 minutes, further bolstering the van’s practicality for commercial operations.

The heart of the eSprinter’s propulsion system is a permanent magnet synchronous motor, positioned at the rear axle. Weighing 286 pounds, this motor is recognized for its exceptional efficiency and optimized thermal management. The motor is available in two power variants: 134 horsepower (100 kilowatts) or 201 horsepower (150 kW). Regardless of the power level chosen, both configurations deliver a peak torque of up to 295 pound-feet for at least 30 seconds, ensuring responsive performance.

To enhance energy efficiency, the eSprinter boasts three distinct drive programs – eco, comfort, and max range – alongside five recuperation stages. The automatic function (D Auto) intelligently adjusts the energy recovery rate based on real-time traffic conditions, utilizing input from a radar sensor.

Remaining consistent with the iconic Sprinter design language, the all-new eSprinter retains the hallmark features of its predecessor. Notable specifications include a voluminous load capacity of 488 cubic feet, an impressive maximum payload of 2,624 pounds, and a permissible gross vehicle weight of 4.25 tons. Moreover, the electric van provides adaptability through its potential transformation into a mobile workshop or a capacious delivery vehicle.

Customers seeking tailored solutions can explore the offerings from Mercedes-Benz’s eXpertUpfitter program, featuring options such as shelving systems, robust workbenches, and heavy-duty wood floors, all designed to suit diverse cargo requirements.

Despite its premium price point, the Mercedes-Benz eSprinter offers a host of desirable features available as optional additions. These encompass the cutting-edge Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) operating system, “Electric Intelligence” equipped navigation, a digital rearview mirror, and more.

Purchasers of the eSprinter will benefit from a Battery Certificate and a comprehensive maintenance package that encompasses the first four years of service, all bundled within the purchase price. Envisaged deliveries for the US market are scheduled to commence in the latter half of this year, marking a significant stride toward the electrification of the commercial vehicle landscape.
