German automaker Mercedes-Benz is reportedly set to incorporate a smart driving solution from Chinese startup Momenta into its all-electric CLA model, a move that underscores its efforts to enhance driver assistance capabilities.
The high-level intelligent driving system from Momenta will enable pilot-assisted driving in urban environments without relying on high-definition maps, according to a report from local media outlet 36kr.
Scheduled to commence production in April 2025, the Mercedes-Benz CLA equipped with Momenta’s solution will feature Nvidia’s Orin smart driving chip. This collaboration marks the first time Mercedes-Benz has adopted a technology solution from a Chinese smart driving supplier, highlighting the increasing significance of China’s smart driving sector.
Momenta, founded in 2016 and headquartered in Suzhou near Shanghai, has established a strong presence in China and several international markets, including Germany, Japan, and the US. The company has received strategic investments from key players such as SAIC Motor Corp, General Motors, Mercedes-Benz, Toyota, and Bosch.
Mercedes-Benz’s decision to partner with Momenta underscores its commitment to advancing driver assistance capabilities, particularly in urban settings. The move also reflects Mercedes-Benz’s strategy to appeal to a younger, more tech-savvy demographic interested in innovative smart driving features.
While Mercedes-Benz has been relatively slower in deploying smart driving technologies compared to some competitors, the integration of Momenta’s solution into the CLA signifies a significant step forward. The new CLA, based on Mercedes-Benz’s MMA (Mercedes-Benz Modular Architecture) platform, is expected to offer advanced pilot-assisted driving features, further enhancing its appeal among consumers seeking cutting-edge automotive technology.
