In a significant development toward Norway’s ambitious goal of achieving a fossil-free aviation system by 2050, Mer has emerged victorious in a tender issued by airport operator Avinor. The contract, spanning twelve years, entails the construction of an extensive network of electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure at 42 airports across the country.

While the precise number of AC and DC charging points to be deployed remains undisclosed, the initiative aims to cater to the charging needs of travelers, airport employees, and other visitors. It also includes the takeover of existing AC chargers at the various airports, with the transition process having commenced in September.

Notably, a press photo accompanying the announcement showcased High-Power Charging (HPC) columns from Kempower, hinting at the potential technology underpinning this endeavor.

Avinor, the state-owned operator of Norwegian airports, has set an ambitious target to make its own operations entirely fossil-free by 2030. Furthermore, there is a forward-looking plan to electrify short-haul flights in Norway by 2040. The collaboration between Avinor and Mer positions the latter as a key player in advancing these sustainability objectives.

Amy Løken-Erichsen, Avinor’s Commercial Manager for the countryside, expressed the significance of this partnership, stating, “Expanding and improving the charging offer at a total of 42 airports is an important milestone for Avinor. We have both travelers and partners who have been in demand this, and now we, together with our new charging partner Mer, can finally offer it.”

In parallel with this infrastructure expansion, Mer is rolling out the Autocharge function in Norway. This innovative feature, accessible via the Mer app, streamlines the charging process for customers. Once activated, Autocharge enables automatic authentication and billing, requiring users only to plug in the charging cable into their vehicle, eliminating the need for manual intervention.

Mer’s comprehensive contract with Avinor, coupled with the introduction of user-friendly charging technology, underscores the growing commitment to sustainable transportation solutions and marks a noteworthy step toward Norway’s green aviation future.
