London Mayor Unveils Ambitious Plan for More Than 80 New Rapid Charging Points Across the City

Title: London Mayor Announces Expansion of Rapid Charging Points Across the City

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has unveiled plans to introduce over 80 new rapid charging points throughout the British capital, aiming to bolster the city’s electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure. The initiative, led by Transport for London (TfL), involves inviting bids from suppliers for two delivery contracts covering a total of 51 sites across North and South London. These contracts will facilitate the installation of 83 new charging bays, in addition to the initial batch of sites that were put out to market in November 2022. The first delivery contract has already been awarded to Zest, who are expected to install 39 rapid charging bays by the end of 2024.

With this expansion, TfL will have released a total of 122 rapid charging bays to the market, surpassing their initial target of 100. Subject to supplier agreements, the remaining sites could be operational by the end of 2025.

Mayor Khan made the announcement during a visit to Volta Trucks, coinciding with the UK market launch of their electric heavy goods vehicle trucks. Emphasizing the importance of decarbonizing road transport, he praised Volta Trucks for their London trial of fully electric heavy goods vehicles. Mayor Khan acknowledged the significance of zero-emission freight and highlighted the need for robust infrastructure to support the growing number of electric vehicles on London’s roads. The new charging sites will cater to high-mileage road users, including commercial vehicles and businesses, with the aim of advancing London’s sustainability goals and creating a greener and more prosperous city for all.
