Lectron, a leading manufacturer of charging adapters, has initiated a recall affecting 1,624 Vortex Tesla Supercharger to Combined Charging System (CCS) adapters. This move comes in response to concerns raised by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) regarding potential safety issues.
According to the NHTSA, the affected adapters may not securely latch to the charger, posing a risk of the charger becoming disconnected without shutting off the power. This could increase the risk of injury from an electrical shock.
The Safety Recall Report revealed that the adapters, manufactured between March 14 and April 8, have a latch pin that deviates from the intended design, preventing them from securely locking. As a result, the charger coupler can potentially be forcibly removed by the user without depressing the NACS latch.
The recall was prompted by a video posted by an unidentified YouTuber, where the user reported difficulty latching their adapter to a Tesla Supercharger. Dropcases LTD, the manufacturer of the component, initiated an investigation after being made aware of the video. It was determined that an error in the supplier’s processes led to a limited number of non-conforming units being shipped to customers.
Dropcases LTD has stated that they will replace the adapters with new ones featuring a NACS latch pin with a straight edge, designed to prevent the removal of the charging coupler unless the NACS latch is depressed. It is important to note that the adapters were sold directly to consumers and do not involve any other OEMs or distributors.
