Leaked Image Suggests Tesla Cybertruck Will Lack Rear Pass-Through Feature

A leaked image of the forthcoming Tesla Cybertruck’s frame has sparked speculation that the highly anticipated all-electric pickup may not include a rear pass-through or midgate feature. The image, shared on the @TeslaPhx Twitter account, has raised questions among reservation holders and fans who have been eagerly awaiting details about the truck’s capabilities since its debut in 2019.

While neither the Austin-based electric vehicle manufacturer nor its CEO Elon Musk have explicitly promised the inclusion of such a feature, enthusiasts have been hopeful about the possibility. However, it appears that both the Chevrolet Silverado EV and the GMC Sierra EV will outperform the Cybertruck in this aspect. The top-tier trim levels of these rival pickups offer an optional cargo tunnel cutout, enabling the transport of items longer than 9 feet (2.7 meters) in the truck bed without the need for roof bars or racks.

The presence of a midgate in the Silverado EV also presents advantages for overlanders and campers, who can utilize the rear pass-through to sleep comfortably in the truck bed, with or without a cover, while enjoying outdoor adventures.

In addition, if recent rumors hold true that the Cybertruck will only have a range of 350 miles (563 kilometers) upon release, Tesla’s inaugural pickup could face further competition from the Silverado EV, which boasts an impressive range of up to 450 miles (724 kilometers) on a full charge.

There is a separate rumor circulating online that suggests the Cybertruck might compensate for the absence of a midgate with a roll-down rear window. This speculation posits that the window mechanism could obstruct the cutout, preventing its inclusion. However, this potential feature may allow for the transportation of longer objects.

Concrete details regarding the Cybertruck’s specifications will likely emerge when it becomes available for sale later this year, possibly in September. Tesla has already commenced production of customer-specific units, marking a significant milestone almost four years after the model’s initial unveiling.
