Keolis, a public transport operator in Northern Europe, has recently been awarded a prestigious ten-year contract by the Stockholm Regional Transport Authority, Trafikförvaltningen. The contract entails the operation and maintenance of bus routes in and around Stockholm, with a remarkable focus on sustainable transportation. Under this agreement, an impressive eighty percent of the distances covered by Keolis will be served by electric buses, while the remaining vehicles will run on biodiesel.
With a total value exceeding 600 million euros, the contract marks a significant milestone for Keolis and reinforces its commitment to eco-friendly transportation solutions. The network is scheduled to commence operations in 2024, encompassing 54 routes and approximately 1,400 stops across the Bromma, Solna, Sundbyberg, and Sollentuna municipalities, situated in the northern and western regions of Stockholm. Keolis plans to deploy a fleet of 200 city and suburban buses, although the specific bus models to be used have not yet been disclosed.
In anticipation of the contract period’s commencement, Keolis has pledged to adapt all its depots with charging infrastructure. This forward-thinking approach ensures that adequate facilities will be in place to accommodate the charging needs of the electric buses, thus facilitating smooth and efficient operations.
This recent success in Stockholm builds upon Keolis’ growing reputation as a leader in sustainable public transportation. In 2021, the company secured another ten-year contract worth 150 million euros to operate and maintain fully electric articulated buses in Gothenburg. The city of Gothenburg has set an ambitious goal to electrify its entire municipal bus fleet by 2030, and Keolis is poised to play a vital role in achieving this objective.
Beyond Sweden, Keolis also operates in Denmark and the Netherlands, contributing its expertise in delivering reliable and sustainable transportation solutions. Moreover, Keolis has set its sights on introducing autonomous minibuses to the roads of Châteauroux, located in the heart of France, as part of a consortium. This innovative project is projected to commence in 2026, showcasing Keolis’ dedication to exploring cutting-edge technologies and pushing the boundaries of transportation possibilities.
Keolis’ latest contract win in Stockholm underscores the company’s ongoing commitment to advancing sustainable mobility solutions and contributing to the transition towards greener transportation options. As the network begins operations in 2024, residents and commuters can look forward to an environmentally friendly and efficient public transport system that aligns with the region’s goals of reducing emissions and fostering a more sustainable future.
