In a recent development, freight forwarder J.B. Hunt has placed a new order with Nikola Motor for 13 zero-emission trucks, aiming to bolster their commitment to sustainability. The order includes ten battery-electric trucks and three fuel cell-powered vehicles, representing a significant step towards reducing carbon emissions in the transportation sector.
Scheduled for delivery starting this month, the heavy-duty trucks will be deployed in various regions, particularly in the Los Angeles metropolitan area and the vicinity of Phoenix, Arizona. The move aligns with California’s ongoing efforts to promote zero-emission transportation, with the Port of Los Angeles and the Port of Long Beach leading multiple initiatives to support green trucking programs.
To cater to the growing demand for clean energy solutions, Nikola’s H2 brand, HYLA, launched earlier this year, will provide the hydrogen and refueling infrastructure required for the fuel cell-powered vehicles. HYLA plans to construct 60 public hydrogen fueling stations by 2026, with the first station to be established in the Los Angeles area.
Furthermore, California is rapidly advancing its hydrogen infrastructure and High Power Charging (HPC) capabilities for truck transport, signifying a strong commitment to sustainable transportation solutions. The Port of Long Beach has already taken significant strides by collaborating with WattEV to open truck charging facilities for 14 Nikola battery-electric trucks acquired in May 2023.
JB Hunt’s decision to integrate these zero-emission trucks into their fleet aligns with their sustainability goals, as they announced their ambitious plans in November 2022 to reduce carbon emissions by 32 percent by 2034 compared to 2019 levels. This partnership with Nikola Motor showcases their dedication to promoting cleaner and more environmentally friendly transportation options.
