At the 2022 IAA transportation exhibition, Iveco Group has officially launched its first Iveco eDaily hydrogen or fuel cell electric van (FCEV), which was designed in collaboration with the Korean automotive manufacturer, Hyundai Motor Company.
The Iveco eDaily is a reflection of Iveco and Hyundai’s ambitious sustainability goals, as demonstrated by their respective commitments, and leveraging their collaboration to help accelerate the transition to zero CO2 emissions.
“Our battery-electric eDaily project has become a reality, we are excited to present the world’s first hydrogen-powered eDaily,” said Marco Liccardo, Iveco Group Chief Technology & Digital Officer.
Since signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in March 2022, Iveco and Hyundai have established joint working groups across various technology streams to explore ways they can complement each other in the development of electric vehicles and alternative propulsion.
With this collaboration, the eDaily FCEV van is equipped with an FPT Industrial battery which is a powertrain brand from the Iveco Group. The hydrogen cell system is provided by Hyundai as the latest step in its hydrogen mobility journey for more than 20 years.
This van has a weight of 7.2 tons which has been tested in Europe where the eDaily FCEV can cover a distance of up to 350 km, carry a maximum payload of 3 tons and a refueling time of 15 minutes.
The car is also equipped with Hyundai’s 90 kW hydrogen fuel cell system and a 140 kW electric motor with 6 hydrogen tanks offering a combined storage capacity of 12 kg of hydrogen.
Hyundai’s advanced fuel cell technology is already being used in a variety of applications, and especially in the commercial vehicle sector. The system logs over 4.5 million km in Switzerland in a heavy-duty truck that demonstrates its robust performance and reliability.
Earlier in July, Iveco and Hyundai had jointly announced the hydrogen-powered Iveco Bus vehicle equipped with the Hyundai fuel cell system, with the relevant advantages expected in terms of performance and emissions.
“The hydrogen-powered eDaily is another vivid example of what we can achieve by working together to accelerate the transition to carbon neutrality,” said Martin Zeilinger, Head of the Commercial Vehicle Development Technology Unit at Hyundai Motor Company.
This FCEV eDaily van will conduct trials with selected customers at the end of 2022. “The partnership between the two companies has proven to be very successful and we expect even better results in the years to come,” continued Martin
Iveco Group and Hyundai are also considering other collaboration options, ranging from cross-selling of products in select regions around the world to joint developments in vehicle automation and connectivity.
Such developments demonstrate the company’s commitment to pursuing every valuable opportunity and both parties are confident that the ongoing project will deliver results in the near future.
