Spanish bus manufacturer Irizar has delivered its first right-hand drive electric bus, the ie tram, to Go-Ahead London, marking a significant milestone in the city’s transition to zero-emission public transport. The 20 units will operate on one of London’s longest bus routes, utilizing advanced ultra-fast charging technology.
The ie tram features a design reminiscent of a tram and is equipped with cutting-edge charging capabilities. Two 450 kW pantograph chargers, installed by Jema Energy, a subsidiary of Irizar Group, enable the buses to recharge sufficient energy in just six minutes at either end of the route. Additionally, Jema Energy has provided 100 kW depot chargers capable of charging two buses simultaneously with 50 kW each.
“We are proud to be a partner in this project, which represents another step in London’s green transition,” said Iñigo Etxeberria, Managing Director of Irizar e-mobility, at the launch event held at the Crystal Palace bus depot. “This project in London, a global showcase, is a milestone for our company and an important step in positioning ourselves in the UK.”
The buses, ordered in 2022, are 12-metre standard versions of the ie tram, although Irizar also offers an 18-metre articulated variant. Tom Joyner, Managing Director of Go-Ahead London, expressed pride in the company’s progress toward zero emissions, noting the significance of this latest addition to their fleet.
Irizar also announced plans for a new UK headquarters near Blyth, North Nottinghamshire, set to open in late 2025. The facility will span 16,000 square metres and include offices, a showroom, and bus handover facilities. This strategic move aligns with the UK’s position as the largest e-bus market in Europe, further solidifying Irizar’s presence in the region.
