The Ministry of Industry announced on Monday that Indonesia and Japan are collaborating to develop the automotive industry, with a focus on electric vehicles and carbon neutrality (CN) fuels, including biofuels. The partnership was revealed by Taufik Bawazier, the Director General of Metal, Machinery, Transportation Equipment and Electronics (ILMATE) at the Industry Ministry, citing state-run media Antaranews.
According to Taufik, the two countries are in dialogue about automotive industry policies, particularly with regards to reducing emissions. “As one of the countries with the best automotive industry in the world, we believe cooperation with Japan can support efforts to achieve carbon neutrality,” he said on February 27.

Representatives from both nations were present in the dialogue, including Fujimoto Takeshi, the Director General of the Secretariat of the Minister of Trade Policy (Bureau of Manufacturing Industry) from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) in Japan. Hirofumi Oima, METI’s Director of International Trade Policy for Automotive, and Enomoto Masato, the Chair of the Japan Automotive Manufacturers’ Association (JAMA) Asia Experts Group, were also in attendance.
This collaboration is significant as both countries are major players in the automotive industry, and it demonstrates their commitment to tackling climate change through sustainable development. By working together to develop cleaner energy sources and more efficient vehicles, Indonesia and Japan can set an example for the rest of the world and help to reduce global carbon emissions.
