New Way Trucks, in collaboration with hydrogen fuel cell specialist Hyzon, has unveiled North America’s first hydrogen fuel cell-powered electric refuse truck at Waste Expo in Las Vegas. This groundbreaking vehicle is the first outcome of their Joint Development Agreement (JDA).

The hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (HFCEV) will be part of pilot programs in California following the expo, starting with Recology, a San Francisco-based employee-owned solid waste and recycling hauler. Recology CEO Sal Coniglio expressed pride in their fleet sustainability leadership and excitement about being the first to test this technology in California communities.

The truck is powered by Hyzon’s 200kW fuel cell system, which boasts impressive efficiency and cost-effectiveness compared to competitors. Hyzon’s fuel cells are capable of providing consistent power over 125 miles, including up to 1,200 cart lifts and trips to the transfer station.

Hyzon CEO Parker Meeks highlighted the success of a similar pilot project in Australia and emphasized their joint mission to provide North American refuse collection fleets with a sustainable power solution that meets zero-emission requirements while delivering reliable performance.
