Hyundai and Motional have confirmed plans to manufacture self-driving taxis based on the Ioniq 5 model at the Hyundai Motor Group Innovation Center Singapore (HMGICS). Motional, a Boston-based autonomous driving technology company, has been testing Ioniq 5 taxis as prototypes in Las Vegas, Nevada, and aims to deploy them for commercial operations in the U.S. starting in 2024.
Motional’s President and CEO, Karl Iagnemma, expressed pride in the collaboration, stating, “We’re enormously proud to have the Ioniq 5 robotaxi manufactured at this facility and look forward to introducing the world to some of the first-ever FMVSS-certified autonomous vehicles.” He highlighted the strength of their collaboration with Hyundai, emphasizing the development of an industry-leading robotaxi meeting rigorous federal standards and ready for mass commercialization.
The Ioniq 5 self-driving taxis produced at HMGICS will come off the line with fully integrated software and hardware, including radar, lidar, and cameras. This approach, according to Hyundai, ensures the highest quality and international scalability. The Ioniq 5 is among the first Level 4 autonomous vehicles certified under the United States Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, reflecting its reliability and safety.
While the initial deployment is set for the U.S., Hyundai and Motional have global expansion plans. The collaboration signifies a significant milestone in advancing self-driving technology and bringing autonomous vehicles closer to widespread commercial use.
