Gotion High-tech, a Chinese battery manufacturer backed by Volkswagen, has revealed plans to establish new battery production facilities in Slovakia and Morocco as part of its strategy to expand its international footprint. The total investment for both projects is approximately 2.514 billion euros ($2.6 billion).

The Slovakian plant, with an investment of up to 1.234 billion euros, will have an annual capacity of 20 GWh of lithium batteries. It will be built by Gotion InoBat Batteries (GIB) EnergyX Slovakia, a joint venture where Gotion holds an 80 percent stake, and InoBat Auto jsa owns the remaining 20 percent. Gotion acquired a 25 percent stake in InoBat last September. The plant, located in Surany, Slovakia, will be constructed in phases and is expected to begin production in January 2027, reaching full capacity by June 2027. The facility will primarily serve the EU market, providing local power battery supply.

In Morocco, Gotion plans to invest up to 1.28 billion euros to construct another 20 GWh battery plant. The facility, located in the Rabat region, will be built by Gotion Power Morocco, a fully owned subsidiary of Gotion. The Moroccan government signed an investment agreement with Gotion in June, and CDG Group, Morocco’s largest public financial investment institution, will invest 300 million euros in the first phase of the project. Gotion’s partnership with CDG aims to support the development and operations of the plant.

Gotion is ranked as one of the top global EV battery producers, holding a 2.6 percent market share globally in the January-October period, according to South Korean market research firm SNE Research. In China, Gotion ranks fourth, with 3.56 GWh of installed capacity and a 5.29 percent market share, as reported by the China Automotive Battery Innovation Alliance (CABIA). The new facilities in Slovakia and Morocco are expected to further bolster Gotion’s position in the global electric vehicle battery market.
