EMTUSA, the public transport operator of Gijón in northern Spain, has ordered four electric city buses from Spanish manufacturer Irizar, expanding its efforts to decarbonise its urban fleet. The order follows the recent addition of six electric buses supplied by Poland’s Solaris.
The newly ordered 12-metre-long vehicles are part of Irizar’s ie model series and are scheduled for delivery in March 2026. Once operational, they will serve Line 10, a key east-west route across Gijón that carries more than 2.8 million passengers annually. The buses will feature a charging capacity of up to 150 kW and support both pantograph and CCS2 depot charging.

The procurement is part of EMTUSA’s 2024–2027 fleet renewal plan, which aims to incorporate 21 electric buses and 16 hybrid articulated units. Infrastructure upgrades are already underway, with six 150 kW charging points installed between September 2024 and February 2025. In total, the operator plans to deploy 90 charging points — including 74 pantographs and 16 cable-based systems — backed by two transformer stations with a combined output of 5,000 kVA.
Irizar’s electric buses are equipped with the GSR2 ADAS safety standard, which includes advanced driver assistance features and cybersecurity systems. The company noted that this order brings its total production of electric buses to over 1,200 units since the launch of its eMobility division nine years ago. Irizar has recently secured contracts in several European cities, including Barcelona, London, and Luxembourg.
