Genesis is gearing up to introduce hybrid models alongside its existing lineup of internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric vehicles (EVs), as hybrids gain traction in the electrification trend. While Hyundai Group had previously announced that all new Genesis models from 2025 would be fully electric, a new report indicates a possible shift towards hybrids as an interim solution.
Currently, Genesis offers a range of fully electric models including the GV60, Electrified GV70, and Electrified G80, with only the GV60 utilizing an EV-specific platform. This leaves room for hybridization in the ICE-powered lineup, including the G70, GV70, G80, GV80, and GV80 Coupe.

Although Genesis has not yet offered a hybrid model, Hyundai Group possesses the necessary technical expertise. Reports suggest that upcoming Genesis hybrids could feature an electrified 2.5-liter engine, promising improved fuel efficiency over ICE models without the reliance on charging infrastructure associated with full EVs. While there is demand for plug-in hybrids from US dealers, initial offerings may focus on self-charging hybrid technology.
Sales figures indicate that Genesis buyers have been slow to adopt fully electric vehicles. In 2023, Genesis sold 225,189 vehicles, with only 18,846 being EVs. This is only a slight increase from the 18,759 EVs sold in 2022 out of 215,128 units.

Hyundai Group’s overall sales also show a similar trend. Comparing Q4 stats from 2022 and 2023, the EV share dropped from 5.7 percent to 5.3 percent, while the hybrid share increased from 7.1 percent to 10.6 percent. This suggests that hybrids could serve as a stepping stone for Genesis customers transitioning to electric vehicles.
