Genesis Explores Launch of Small Luxury EV for European Market

South Korean luxury carmaker Genesis is exploring the possibility of launching a small electric vehicle (EV) focused on the European market as part of its plan to expand its lineup. Mark Choi, the company’s head of product planning, told Autocar that a smaller EV model could be particularly important for the European market, although many factors need to be taken into account before it is given the green light.

Choi explained that Genesis needs to factor in the growth of sales anticipated for its current cars, weigh that against its manufacturing capacity, and consider the rising cost of raw materials to make an informed decision. The proposed model would be positioned below the GV60 in the brand’s range and could draw inspiration from the Mint Concept that was unveiled back in 2019.

SangYup Lee, Genesis’ design boss, highlighted the potential of a small luxury car, stating that “When you live in a city, you don’t necessarily want a big car, so a small luxury vehicle is something to think about. There are premium small cars, but a luxury small car could be something new.”

Genesis is already one of the most promising new entrants into the luxury vehicle segment and has shown that it can build a superb EV with the GV60. A small EV designed for the European market could be a significant expansion of its lineup, especially as European consumers are increasingly seeking eco-friendly options.

Genesis is clearly focused on delivering high-quality luxury cars that meet the evolving needs of consumers, and the potential launch of a small luxury EV would be a significant step forward in achieving that goal. As SangYup Lee stated, “We want to understand what a small luxury car could be,” and with the right balance of factors, it could become a compelling addition to the Genesis lineup.
