UK-based Fusion Processing has joined forces with Construct Invest to roll out fully automated electric buses for airport passenger transport, as the industry looks to streamline ground operations through automation and sustainability.
The collaboration combines Fusion Processing’s CAVstar® Automated Drive System with Construct Invest’s expertise in autonomous vehicle deployment, delivering Level 4 autonomous vehicles capable of operating without human input in designated environments. The initiative will be formally showcased at the Passenger Terminal EXPO in Madrid in April 2025.

Over 90,000 kilometers of operation, Fusion’s system has demonstrated a 7% energy savings compared to manually operated buses. The company targets a 20% reduction in energy use by the end of 2025. According to Fusion, the system also enhances safety by removing human error and contributes to cost efficiency through reduced wear on components and lower maintenance needs. Operational costs could be cut by up to 30%, and the remote operation feature allows a single operator to supervise multiple buses.
“This integrated transport solution reduces costs, enhances sustainability and safety, and improves passenger service,” said Jim Hutchinson, CEO of Fusion Processing. Karsten Baltzer, CEO of Construct Invest, added, “Fusion’s proven CAVstar® technology aligns with our mission for innovative transport solutions.”
