Fortum, a Finnish energy company, has joined forces with Terrafame, a mining company, in an innovative initiative aimed at recycling battery materials. The collaboration involves the utilization of raw recycled materials from Fortum to manufacture battery chemicals, which will subsequently be employed in the production of new batteries.
Under the terms of the agreement, Fortum will provide Terrafame with nickel and cobalt extracted from the black battery mass of electric vehicles. These valuable metals will be obtained from discarded batteries sourced from Fortum’s recycling facility located in Harjavalta. Terrafame will then employ these recycled raw materials to create battery chemicals specifically designed for the manufacturing of fresh batteries. Ultimately, these batteries will be subjected to recycling at the end of their life cycle, effectively closing the loop on raw material usage. The trial project, commencing this month, is expected to foster a collaborative partnership lasting several years.
Expressing enthusiasm about the initiative, Tero HollĂ€nder, Head of Business Line Batteries at Fortum Battery Recycling, emphasized the significance of contributing to the sustainability of the Finnish battery cluster. He stated, “We are very pleased to be part of producing even more sustainable battery chemicals whilst contributing to the sustainability of the Finnish battery cluster. In addition, the collaboration with Terrafame is a step towards a more self-sufficient European battery manufacturing industry with less need to use imported raw materials.”
This strategic cooperation between Fortum and Terrafame showcases a commendable commitment to advancing the circular economy principles within the battery industry. By integrating recycling practices and reusing recovered materials, these Finnish companies are not only reducing waste but also fostering a more sustainable and resource-efficient approach to battery production. As the trial project unfolds, it holds promising potential for the further development of eco-friendly battery technologies, driving Europe’s transition towards a greener future.
