Ford is reportedly preparing to assemble batteries for electric vehicles at its plant in Craiova, Romania, with local sources citing the readiness of the production site. This development would allow the final assembly of battery packs directly at the vehicle manufacturing facility, streamlining the production process for electric models.
According to the Romanian outlet Economedia, Fordâs decision to localize battery assembly comes amidst its ongoing project to build a battery assembly plant in Cologne, Germany, intended to supply battery packs for the Explorer and Capri models. While fully assembled battery packs could have been transported to Craiova from Germany, Ford seems to have opted for local assembly instead.
The report suggests that the cells for the batteries to be assembled in Craiova will be sourced from ABEEâs Romvolt factory, currently under construction in GalaÈi, eastern Romania. The new battery assembly center is expected to be situated alongside the existing motor production facilities, although Ford has not confirmed this information and declined to comment when approached by Romanian media.
Since 2022, the Craiova plant has been part of Ford Otosan, a joint venture between Ford and Turkeyâs Koç Holding. Ford plans to produce three electric models at this site: the E-Transit Courier, the E-Tourneo Courier, and the Puma Gen-E. These models will share a platform and utilize a common battery pack, offering approximately 55 kWh in their electric configurations.
