In a recent email sent out to its customers, Electrify America has announced significant billing changes that will be implemented across its network on August 17th this year. The company took the initiative to clarify some of the new rules to ensure its customers are well-informed about these important modifications.

Regardless of whether you are a casual user or a frequent customer of the Electrify America network, it is crucial to understand the key changes that will take effect in less than a month.

The first notable change involves an update to the terms of use and arbitration rules. Additionally, there are three main pricing adjustments that users need to be aware of:

  1. Increase in Pass+ Subscription Fee: The monthly fee for Pass+ subscribers will see an increase from $4.00 to $7.00. While this translates to an additional $36 per year, totaling $84 per year, compared to the previous $48/year, Pass+ members will still enjoy a 25% discount on the per-kWh or per-minute price, depending on their charging location.
  2. Transition to Station-Specific Pricing: Electrify America will be shifting from uniform pricing across the country to a station-specific pricing model, which is subject to change. Users will need to check the Electrify America app for station-specific prices upon arrival, as the listed prices in the app may not always be accurate.
  3. Introduction of Idle Fees: The company will begin charging idle fees at most of its locations nationwide. Following a ten-minute grace period after charging completion, customers will be billed $0.40 per minute until they unplug their vehicle from the charger.

While the increased monthly fee for Pass+ members may not significantly impact regular users, occasional users who were content with the $48 annual fee and the 25% discount may reconsider their subscription. However, for those who use the network at least once a month, the savings from the 25% discount may likely offset the monthly fee.

The most significant change is undoubtedly the shift to station-specific pricing. Electrify America will now tailor pricing to each station based on the local electricity costs, allowing for a margin of profit. This change was anticipated in the industry, considering the substantial variations in electricity costs across different regions.

The introduction of idle fees is a positive step taken by Electrify America to ensure fair usage of the charging stations. After the grace period, customers will be charged for idle time, encouraging them to unplug their vehicles promptly and make space for other users.

Overall, these billing changes by Electrify America aim to improve the efficiency and sustainability of their charging network, ensuring a fair and optimized experience for all EV users.
