Dost’s Crate E-Bike: The Ultimate Cargo Hauler for Practical Commuting

Canadian e-bike manufacturer Dost has been making practical, utilitarian e-bikes since it hit the scene in 2019. Its latest model, the Crate, continues this trend with impressive cargo-carrying capabilities and advanced technology. With a rear-focused cargo design and a modular cargo system, the Crate can carry up to 440 pounds of cargo or passengers.

Dost’s focus on practicality and versatility is evident in the Crate’s design. Its compact size eliminates the need for extended racks, allowing it to maintain proportions similar to that of a standard city commuter. The bike features a sturdy, stable platform thanks to its beefy square-tube 6061 aluminum frame and rigid 6061 fork, providing more than enough capability to carry some serious cargo. The bike also includes attachment points for Dost’s wide selection of in-house optional accessories, including passenger seats, panniers, rear baskets, and front racks.

The Dost Crate is equipped with a Bafang M600 mid-drive motor with a nominal output of 750 watts, which provides plenty of power for climbing hills with passengers or cargo in tow. Additionally, the bike is equipped with a torque sensor for seamless and smooth pedal assistance, as well as five modes depending on the terrain and cargo being hauled. The bike is also fitted with a throttle, making it possible to ride around without pedaling at all.

The bike’s Enviolo CVT automatic gearbox is specifically designed for cargo bikes, providing maximum efficiency and performance by automatically selecting the most efficient ratio depending on the motor’s power output. Cyclists who prefer manual shifting can do so by switching the system to manual mode. The Crate also features a comprehensive lighting system composed of a brake light, taillight, and 100-lux LED headlight with high and low beam settings, as well as a kickstand and multi-color LCD screen displaying important ride data.

The Crate is available for pre-order for $500 USD, with prices for the single-battery version starting at $4,999 USD. The dual-battery option adds an additional $699 USD. The bikes are expected to make their way to customers by December 2023.

In a statement, Dost’s founder and CEO, John Davis, said, “With the Crate, we wanted to create a bike that was not only practical and versatile, but also stylish and fun to ride. We believe we’ve achieved that with the Crate, which combines advanced technology, impressive cargo-carrying capabilities, and a sleek design.”
