Swiss eMobility specialist Designwerk has announced the launch of its latest battery systems for electric vehicles (EVs). The new range includes four models with varying capacities, including two new battery systems with capacities of 125 and 250 kilowatt hours (kWh), and voltage options of 400 or 800 volts maximum each.
One of the most significant additions to the new range is a battery system with a gross capacity of 254.2 kWh, which Designwerk claims is one of the largest EV systems available. The company has also revealed impressive energy density specifications, including a gravimetric energy density of 181 Wh/kg and a volumetric energy density of 257 Wh/l.
This means that a 254.2 kWh battery system would require 1.4 tonnes and 990 litres of installation space, while the 125 kWh system would require half as much. However, Designwerk has stated that the individual battery systems can be interconnected with a high-voltage distribution unit, making it possible to create custom battery packs ranging from 125 kWh to 1,000 kWh.

The new battery systems will primarily be used in trucks and other commercial vehicles for both on- and off-road applications. Designwerk has also highlighted that the new systems offer high charging rates and good cycle stability, although exact figures have not been provided.
With the launch of the new range, Designwerk aims to offer its customers more options to meet individual installation space and performance requirements. The company’s battery management system (BMS) remains a core feature of the new systems, monitoring all parameters and specifying the maximum available power based on state of charge and temperature. Additionally, Designwerk’s standard design includes pre-charge, interlock, fuses, and cooling plates for thermal management, integrated into an aluminum housing with 24 mm insulation on all sides, to protect battery cells from mechanical and thermal influences.
The latest battery systems from Designwerk represent a significant step forward in EV technology, with impressive energy density specifications and the ability to customize battery packs to specific requirements. As EV adoption continues to grow, it is essential to develop innovative solutions that meet the evolving needs of consumers and businesses. Designwerk’s new range of battery systems demonstrates the company’s commitment to driving the industry forward and shaping the future of sustainable transportation.
