Cupra, the performance-focused brand of Seat, is gearing up to introduce a purely electric version of its Formentor model, slated for launch “towards the end of the decade.” The electric Formentor is expected to utilize the Volkswagen Group’s upcoming SSP platform, representing a significant step in Cupra’s electrification strategy.
Seat boss Wayne Griffiths confirmed the plans for the electric Formentor during the brand’s annual press conference, indicating that it will play a key role in Cupra’s expansion into the USA market. The move aligns with Cupra’s ambition to offer only electric vehicles from 2030. The manufacturer’s official press release mentions the USA launch with the electrified Cupra Formentor and a larger crossover SUV, both planned for the end of the decade.
The current Formentor, introduced in 2020, marked Cupra’s first model developed exclusively for the brand, not based on any Seat model. Built on the MQB evo platform from Volkswagen, the current Formentor is also available as a plug-in hybrid.
Cupra’s electric lineup currently includes the MEB-based Born, produced in Zwickau, Germany, and the Tavascan, manufactured in China. The upcoming Raval small electric car, developed in collaboration with the VW ID.2, will be built alongside the ID.2 at the Seat plant in Martorell, expanding Cupra’s electric offerings.
Details about the electric Formentor’s specifications, performance, and pricing are yet to be disclosed.
