In a significant development for Chevrolet Blazer EV reservation holders, General Motors’ Ramos Arizpe assembly plant in Mexico saw the first customer car roll off the production line yesterday. This achievement marks another positive step forward in the company’s ambitious electrification efforts.
The news was shared on the plant’s unofficial Facebook page, accompanied by pictures showcasing the sleek and vibrant 2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV. The vehicle was adorned in eye-catching Riptide Blue Metallic paint, while a Sterling Gray Metallic version was also spotted at the facility.
GM is set to offer two variants of the Blazer EV starting in the summer of 2023: the 2LT and RS. Among the two, the RS took the spotlight as the first model to roll out of the plant. Boasting 21-inch wheels and a stylish blacked-out grille, this variant exudes a strong and sporty presence. As for the other trims, the entry-level 1LT and the range-topping SS will be made available in winter 2024 and fall 2023, respectively. Additionally, Chevrolet plans to introduce a Police Pursuit Vehicle (PPV) version of the electric SUV.
While specific details about the Blazer EV’s battery remain undisclosed, GM has revealed that the RS variant is expected to offer an estimated range of 320 miles (515 kilometers). Moreover, RS customers will have the option to choose between three different drivetrain configurations: front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive, or all-wheel drive.
Performance enthusiasts will be particularly intrigued by the range-topping SS variant, which promises impressive power. Tuned to generate a remarkable 557 horsepower and 648 pound-feet of torque, the SS is designed to deliver an exhilarating driving experience. Furthermore, it will feature a WOW (Wide Open Watts) mode—a nod to the GMC Hummer EV’s Watts To Freedom (WTF) mode—that enables the Blazer EV to accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour in under 4 seconds.
In terms of pricing, the base version of the Blazer EV will start at $44,995 and is expected to be available in early 2024. The Blazer EV 2LT will be priced at $47,595, while the RS variant will have a starting price of $51,995, including destination charges. As for the range-topping SS, customers can expect it to come with a price tag of $65,995 when it becomes available in fall 2023. It remains unclear when GM will reopen reservations, as the order book reached its capacity towards the end of 2022.
Chevrolet is playing a leading role in GM’s push for electric vehicles, with the new Blazer EV being one of many models based on the Ultium dedicated EV platform. The production of the Hummer EV commenced late last year at Factory Zero, formerly known as Detroit-Hamtramck, and was followed by the launch of fleet and commercial variants of the Silverado EV more recently. Furthermore, the Equinox EV began production earlier this month at the Ramos Arizpe plant in Mexico.
GM’s CEO, Mary Barra, recently announced the company’s ambitious goals, stating that they are on track to manufacture over 400,000 battery electric vehicles (BEVs) by mid-next year, with the aim of reaching one million units by 2025. Barra also hinted at the forthcoming successor to the popular Bolt EV, which is scheduled to conclude production at the end of this year.
