CAA-Quebec has added a fully electric Lion5 flatbed tow truck to its roadside assistance fleet, marking a significant milestone as it claims to be the first 100% electric tow truck in service in North America.

The Lion5, a medium-duty truck outfitted with a flatbed body by XpaK Industries, represents a progressive step for CAA-Quebec, which has a history spanning 80 years in roadside assistance. Marie-Soleil Tremblay, president and CEO, emphasized the organization’s commitment to leading the way in electric towing and environmental stewardship.

Equipped with 210 kWh of in-house 800V battery packs, the Lion5 offers a range of up to 310 kilometers (over 190 miles) powered by a high-torque electric motor producing 315 hp. This setup is projected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 75 to 100 metric tons annually compared to conventional diesel trucks.

Additionally, the electric tow truck is expected to lower CAA-Quebec’s energy costs by approximately 80% and maintenance costs by around 60% when compared to gas or diesel counterparts.

Patrick Gervais, VP of Trucks and Public Affairs at Lion, remarked on the collaboration with CAA-Quebec and XpaK, noting their joint efforts to redefine the towing industry for a more sustainable future.

The Lion5 tow truck was delivered in July and will undergo extensive testing over the next year in various towing scenarios and weather conditions. CAA-Quebec plans to share insights gained from this experience with partners across Canada and the AAA in the United States.
