Chinese automaker BYD has launched its latest electric sedan, the Qin L EV, with more than 10,000 units sold in the vehicle’s first week on the market. The model, which debuted on March 24, is positioned as an affordable alternative to Tesla’s Model 3 in China, with a starting price of 119,800 yuan (approximately $16,500).
Comparable in size to the Tesla Model 3, the Qin L EV measures 4,720 mm in length, 1,880 mm in width, and 1,495 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,820 mm. While offering a similar footprint, the Qin L undercuts the Model 3 in price by nearly 50%, as Tesla’s base sedan in China begins at 235,500 yuan ($32,500).

The Qin L EV is available with two versions of BYD’s Blade battery: a 46.08 kWh pack offering up to 470 km (292 miles) CLTC range, and a 56.64 kWh option rated at 545 km (338 miles). Both variants support fast charging from 30% to 80% in approximately 24 minutes. Though the Model 3 boasts a longer range—up to 634 km CLTC for the base version—its higher cost positions the Qin L as a budget-friendly competitor.
In addition to range and pricing, the Qin L includes BYD’s “God’s Eye” smart driving system, with features such as autopilot navigation and remote parking. The vehicle’s interior features a 15.6-inch floating infotainment screen, a 12-inch wide head-up display, and an 8.8-inch digital driver display. BYD’s DiLink 100 smart cockpit system, voice control, 5G connectivity, and AI-based applications further enhance its tech-focused appeal.

Higher-end versions of the Qin L EV include additional amenities such as a built-in mini fridge with heating and cooling functions, while still maintaining a relatively low price ceiling at 139,800 yuan ($19,300). BYD’s early sales figures suggest the model is resonating with cost-conscious consumers seeking modern design, extended range, and intelligent driving features.
