In a striking release of images, BMW’s latest iteration of the 7 Series model has turned heads with its formidable appearance. The window glasses, despite bearing severe cracks, stand remarkably resilient. The body showcases hundreds of bullet holes, yet the interior exudes an air of tranquility. This is no ordinary 7 Series; it’s the cutting-edge Protection model.
This innovative development sees both the BMW i7 and the 7 Series G70 models receiving the prestigious VR9 treatment, which represents the zenith of ballistic certification for civilian vehicles. Distinctively crafted in-house by BMW and produced at the esteemed BMW Plant Dingolfing, the i7 Protection takes the distinction of being the world’s inaugural protection sedan to feature an all-electric powertrain, as declared by the German automaker.
At the heart of the i7 Protection lies an armor-clad steel body, constructed to withstand the potency of 7.62 X 54 R ammunition, a caliber known for its armor-piercing capabilities. The exterior is fortified with hot-formed steel alloy, forming an impervious shield against bullets. Notably, the roof and underbody are also composed of armored materials, heightening the safeguard against aerial assaults and explosive threats.
On the internal combustion engine (ICE) variant, a specially designed casing envelops the fuel tank, enabling it to self-seal upon impact from a bullet, thus averting fuel leakage.
The attention to detail extends to the tires, which appear to be meticulously designed for the task. Boasting 20-inch alloys and Michelin PAX run-flat tires, these treads are engineered to maintain a speed of up to 50 miles per hour even with a complete loss of pressure. A robust sidewall, discernible from the images, stands as one of the few visible distinctions between the standard 7 Series and its armored counterpart.
In line with its discreet aesthetic, BMW has intentionally retained a minimalistic appearance for the protection models. Among the few distinguishable features are the run-flat tires and a flag holder adorning the front fenders.
For discerning customers, BMW offers an array of optional accessories to further enhance the Protection models. These include a fresh air-supply system, automatic and manual discharge fire extinguishers, flashing lights, and radio transceivers, among other choices.
Powering the i7 Protection are the motors derived from the i7 M70, collectively churning out an impressive 544 horsepower and 549 pound-feet of torque. With the added weight of the armor, the acceleration from 0 to 62 mph registers a leisurely 9.0 seconds. The top speed is intentionally capped at 99 mph.
While exact range figures remain undisclosed, BMW has disclosed an estimated WLTP efficiency of 30 kilowatt hours per 100 kilometers. Given the i7’s battery capacity of 101.7 kWh, the projected range is approximately 210 miles. This falls notably shorter than the range offered by the standard i7 M70, which boasts an estimated 295-mile range.
While the armored sedan retains the opulence expected from the 7 Series lineage, boasting features like the BMW Curved Display, a resplendent 28-speaker Bowers & Wilkins Diamond surround sound system, and indulgent reclining seats with footrests, one distinctive feature seems to be omitted – the 31-inch 8K retractable screen. Understandably, those seeking protection from armor-piercing rounds likely prioritize security over cinematic entertainment.
Pricing details remain undisclosed, and the model is slated to be exclusive to European markets. Considering the i7 M70’s price point of $168,500 in the US, it’s anticipated that the armored version will command an even higher cost. As BMW introduces the i7 Protection, it underscores a union of luxury and security that caters to those who demand the pinnacle of both.
