BMW registers new suspension patent to generate electricity from speed bumps in electric vehicle

The electric car is one of the vehicles of the future. For this reason, BMW has prepared many technologies that can help consumers in terms of power consumption.

Quoted from Carbuzz.com. Friday (2/12/2022), BMW is preparing a patent for its newest technology. The technology relates to the car’s suspension.

So, when the suspension works to dampen vibrations or shocks, the resulting vertical movement will be converted into electrical energy. This energy will then be stored in the battery.

The working principle is similar to a regenerative braking system, which converts kinetic energy into electrical energy. This energy can then be stored in the 12V electric car battery or in the high voltage traction battery of an electric vehicle.

Getting energy from a moving car is an extraordinary thing, especially when getting it from an uneven road surface.

With this technology, it’s as if BMW managed to charge the battery for free. But, of course, this technology is not something that is cheap if it is going to be mass produced.

However, this concept is not only developed by BMW. Aftermarket suspension company Gig Performance has also begun developing a similar concept.
