BMW and Amazon partner up to develop vehicle data software using cloud technologies

BMW and Amazon Web Services (AWS) on Sunday (16/10) announced a strategic collaboration to develop innovative cloud technologies to leverage future vehicle data.

Both companies will work to create a ready-to-use cloud solution that can securely manage all vehicle data, a solution that could potentially be offered to other manufacturers as well.

BMW and AWS have been working on connected cars since 2015. As was the case with previous projects, the BMW Group has full and exclusive control over all data and enforces all data protection regulations in all of their respective markets.

To get an idea of the size of the task at hand, BMW’s connected fleet already has more than 20 million vehicles spread across 50 jurisdictions.

Every day this fleet sends ten billion queries to the cloud. Then, all that data will be interrelated and become the basis for BMW services.

Security is a top priority for BMW, while customer data can only be accessed from a central access point that BMW has set up since 2017.

As is known, collaboration with AWS is very important for the BMW Neue Klasse, the upcoming family of electric cars.

The company also expects that the new generation of electric cars will generate three times the volume of data compared to current vehicles.

BMW will use Amazon Alexa tech in its voice assistant future cars
