The Biden Administration is pushing for Tesla to open up its Supercharger network to all electric vehicles (EVs). This means that non-Tesla EV owners would be able to access and charge on the network, which is currently exclusive to Tesla owners. The Supercharger network is the largest and most reliable DC Fast Charging network in the US and is considered one of the top reasons why many EV owners choose a Tesla.
Recently, Tesla CEO Elon Musk spent time in Washington D.C., meeting with Biden aides and senior White House officials to discuss the prospects of opening up the Supercharger network. While details of the meeting are scarce, The Washington Post reported that the Biden Administration hopes to convince Musk to allow other EV manufacturers access to the network.

Tesla can make money from non-Tesla EV owners by charging them to access the Supercharger network. Additionally, if Tesla opens up the network to all EV owners, it could benefit from government funding for EV infrastructure. The Biden Administration has promised that Tesla would produce new Supercharger equipment for non-Tesla EV owners and leaked details of a Tesla “Magic Dock” with a CCS connector for non-Tesla EVs have been circulating.
If Tesla follows through with the White House’s plan, it could receive a portion of the $7.5 billion earmarked for the expansion of public charging infrastructure. However, no official announcement has been made and the outcome is yet to be seen. Regardless, the prospect of a widespread, reliable charging network available to all EV owners is a step in the right direction for the growth of the EV market and sustainable transportation.
