Audi is preparing to launch its next-generation A8 model in 2024, which is set to become the company’s most powerful electric vehicle (EV) and overall vehicle. The release of the A8 EV is a key part of Audi’s transition to an all-electric future, offering unparalleled range and performance.
According to Autocar, the A8 EV will use the largest version of the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) platform, which has been co-developed by Porsche and Audi. The platform will also power the upcoming Porsche Macan EV and the new Q6 e-tron, which will be the first to showcase the architecture designed for a wide range of high-performance EVs.
The PPE platform features ultra-fast 800V charging capabilities, with maximum charging speeds of 270 kW, allowing the A8 EV to charge from 5% to 80% in less than 25 minutes. In addition, the platform has variable ground clearance, wheelbase, and axle track, which enables it to serve as the base for Audi’s largest sedan.
The A8 EV is expected to be based on Audi’s Grandsphere concept, which was released in 2021. Although the actual range is expected to be slightly less, the A8 is expected to have a range of around 750 km (466 miles) thanks to its 120 kWh battery pack. This should make it one of the longest-range EVs on sale.
The Grandsphere concept features two electric motors, one in the front and the other in the rear, providing a combined output of 710 hp and 708 lb-ft of torque. This makes it a significant step up from Audi’s current most powerful vehicle, the 637 hp Audi RS e-tron GT.
The A8 EV will likely feature a more minimalist interior than the concept, with a focus on a digital experience. Sid Odedra, Audi’s user experience boss, told Autocar that the company is “giving you more. With less, we’re going to give you more of a digital experience with less physical architecture.”
The A8 EV is expected to compete with other luxury EVs such as the Mercedes-Benz EQS and BMW i7 and is set to go on sale next year. With its advanced technology and impressive performance, the A8 EV is a significant step forward for Audi as it continues its transition to an all-electric future.
