Yadea has introduced sodium-ion batteries in its electric scooters, marking a first for the company. Available in four models priced between 3,299 and 4,299 yuan ($450-$590), these scooters were showcased at CES 2024 in Las Vegas.

The new sodium-ion batteries offer several benefits, including enhanced safety, environmental friendliness, and a longer lifespan compared to traditional lithium batteries. Yadea emphasizes the improved charging capabilities of the new battery, which can reach 80% charge in just 15 minutes through the HuaYu Sodium Superfast Charging Ecosystem.

Yadea highlights that the new batteries undergo rigorous safety testing, having passed more than 20 tests to ensure fire and explosion resistance under extreme conditions, including puncture and compression. The batteries boast an energy density of 145 Wh/kg, a cycle life of up to 1,500 cycles at room temperature, and durability lasting up to five years. Additionally, the batteries perform well in low temperatures, maintaining over 92% discharge retention at -20°C, and offering a range of about 70 kilometers.

Alongside these advancements, Yadea has launched a new subsidiary, ‘Huayu JiNa Supercharging Ecosystem,’ which focuses on sodium-ion battery development and supercharging stations. These stations will not only fast-charge the batteries but also diagnose their status and lock damaged batteries. Yadea’s ongoing battery-swap network with Gogoro remains a key part of its ecosystem, though it remains unclear how this new initiative will impact the partnership.
