Mercedes-Benz’s advanced DRIVE PILOT autonomous driving system has been approved by Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), paving the way for its deployment in the EQS SUV and S-Class sedans.

The system, designed for highly automated driving, will be available for purchase in Germany starting in spring 2025, with a price tag of €5,950 (VAT included).

The latest iteration of DRIVE PILOT allows operation on German roads at speeds of up to 95 km/h under specific conditions, including flowing traffic on the 13,191-kilometer Autobahn network. Notably, the system permits drivers to take their eyes off the road for tasks like watching a movie.

Mercedes emphasizes safety, noting that the system can prompt the driver to retake control when necessary. In cases where the driver does not respond, the vehicle will safely brake to a halt while activating hazard lights.

To enhance safety and transparency, Mercedes has introduced a designated lighting system to indicate whether the car is under autonomous control or being manually operated. This feature is intended to reassure other drivers and assist law enforcement in identifying the system’s status. “With innovative technologies from Mercedes-Benz, we always want to offer our customers added value,” said Markus Schäfer, Chief Technology Officer of Mercedes-Benz.

Looking ahead, Mercedes aims to increase the maximum speed limit for autonomous driving to 130 km/h by the end of the decade, aligning with Germany’s legal framework for SAE Level 3 systems. However, the company reiterates that the system requires the driver to remain ready to intervene at all times, maintaining the safety-first approach central to its autonomous driving strategy.

With this milestone, Mercedes continues to position itself as a leader in the race toward safe and efficient automated driving, offering customers the promise of enhanced convenience and innovation on the road.
